I’ve been meaning to make a video about the Matterhorn Rock on Grey Friar and the Halifax Bomber memorial at Great Carrs for a little while, and The Tim Traveller’s “international staycation challenge” gave me the motivation to move it up my (long) list of ideas and get the video made. So here it is:
This was definitely a “big day out” and - as my legs reminded me afterwards - I’ve not done a hike of this length or with this much ascent since I did the classic horseshoe of the Helvellyn edges back in October 2019.
After setting off from Coniston I climbed to Swirl How via Levers Water and the Prison Band, before rounding the top of Broad Slack to Great Carrs and the RCAF memorial. After the short walk to Grey Friar and the Matterhorn Rock, I returned to Coniston via Brim Fell and the Old Man, although I didn’t feature the return leg in my video.
So, who would like to see a few photos to go along with the video?
